During World War I, the U.S. aircraft insignia consisted of a white star with a red circle in the center, placed on a blue circular background. This insignia was adopted in 1917, following the U.S. entry into the war, to distinguish American aircraft from those of other nations. The design was influenced by the insignia of the French Air Service, which used a similar roundel.
